QR Code Scams (Quishing)

Fraudsters may place fake QR codes over genuine ones, directing you to fraudulent websites designed to steal personal or payment information. Check for signs of tampering and verify the website address before entering any details.

Criminals can create fake public Wi-Fi networks that look like they're provided by a hotel, café or airport to try and steal personal information. Avoid accessing online banking or making payments on public Wi-Fi and use mobile data where possible.

Pickpocketing and Distraction Scams

Keep your valuables secure and stay aware in busy tourist areas, on public transport and at popular attractions. Criminals may use distraction techniques, such as spilling food or claiming a bird has pooed on your clothing, to divert your attention while stealing from your bag, pocket or belongings.

Cash and Payment Scams

Be cautious when handling cash, checking change and paying for goods or services. Always confirm prices beforehand and review receipts and card transactions regularly.

Criminals often target people booking holidays, particularly during busy travel periods. Whether you're searching for flights, accommodation or activities, understanding the risks can help you protect yourself and your money.

Holiday fraud

Holiday fraud happens when criminals pose as legitimate travel companies, accommodation providers, airlines or booking websites to steal money or personal information.

This can happen when booking flights, accommodation, excursions or attraction tickets through fake websites, adverts or social media posts. Fraudsters may promote unusually cheap deals, create a sense of urgency or use convincing reviews and branding to make offers appear genuine.

Scammers may also take advantage of travel disruption. If a flight is cancelled or delayed, you could be contacted by someone claiming to offer a refund, compensation or alternative travel arrangements. These messages often encourage you to click a link, share personal information or make a payment.

In some cases, victims only discover they've been scammed when they arrive at their destination, attempt to check in, find no booking exists, or realise a promised refund never arrives.

How to protect yourself:

· Book with reputable providers and check for ABTA or ATOL protection

· Research providers before booking and be cautious of unusually cheap deals

· Use secure payment methods that offer buyer protection

· Verify website addresses and avoid booking through links in unsolicited messages

· Contact providers directly using official contact details

· Never share passwords, passcodes or banking security information
